In Gimp you can use the Select Continous Regions wand to select an area that is all of the same color, such as the white background in this eagle picture. When you click the white background, all the white area is selected. However, you don’t want to copy the white background into your collage, you want the eagle! On the Select menu, choose Invert. Now the eagle is selected. Make sure that you choose invert in the eagle window, not in any other window you might have open.
